Global Explained
For other uses see Global (disambiguation).
(Redirected from Worldwide)
The adjective global and the adverb globally mean pertaining to, or embracing, the totality of a number of items, categories, etc. They also mean comprehensive and all-inclusive. Global is a synonym of worldwide and means of, or relating to, or involving the entire world in the general sense or as the planet Earth.[1]
Usage
Global is increasingly considered a synonym of international or world as a way of referring to issues, processes and structures that affect human beings collectively.[2] However, the terms have different usages:
- 'Global' implicitly implies the concept of a certain 'one world'. For example, one of the aims of 'one world' groups is described as 'global government'.[3]
- International is a broader term, in that it can refer to something involving all nations or as few as only two nations, but all must be potentially involved before it becomes truly global. Many companies are international but not global (e.g. domestic firms with subsidiaries abroad).[4]
- Global concerns can transcend geo-political boundaries, species and generations.[5]
- Global is used to refer to things which do involve the Planet Earth as one single unit, for example global maps.[6]
