Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, usually abbreviated to DAIICT, is an educational institution situated in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. It is named after the Gujarati entrepreneur and Reliance group founder Dhirubhai Ambani. It is run by the Dhirubhai Ambani Foundation and is promoted by Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group.
DAIICT commenced operations in August 2001 with an intake of 240 undergraduate students for its flagship program Bacelor of Technology in Information and Communication Technology. Subsequently, it has been expanded to include postgraduate courses as M.Des, MS(IT), MTech(ICT), MS(IT-Agriculture), along with a Doctorate program. The Bachelors programme is of four year duration. The first batch of DAIICT of post graduates passed out in 2004 and the first batch of graduates in 2005.
The institution has on its rolls renowned faculty with expertise in areas of software design, VLSI, RF engineering and Multimedia design. The institute was setup with an initial outlay of INR 750,000,000. In its more than eight years of operation, it has developed a very strong infrastructure with on-campus housing and high-speed LAN for internet connectivity. It is now widely rated as one of the top 10 private ICT institutes in India.
It is the first institute in India to offer Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate degrees in the field of Information and Communication Technology.
The B.Tech programme in information and communication technology (ICT) is a 4-year long programme starting typically in the month of August consisting of 8 semesters. This flagship program provided by DA-IICT is unique in India. Students at undergraduate level have to go through basic foundation courses in computer science, electronics, communications for 2 years. Third year hence, students opt for elective courses alongside some compulsory ones. Open electives which aim at broadening horizons of understanding are also offered and are compulsory for all students. Undergraduate students have to go through summer/winter internships which are taken up in rural sites, industry or at any academic institutions including DAIICT.
The MTech (ICT) program at DA-IICT is a full time 2 years program open to graduates in ICT, Computer Science, Electronics & Communication, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Instrumentation, IT or equivalent OR MSc degree in Physics, Electronics, Mathematics or Statistics, Bio-Technology & Ladwa Technology(Bio Technology only). The M.Tech (ICT) program has been specially designed to meet the increasing need for professionals who would be able to respond to the convergence between computers and communication. It is meant for students who wish to build a professional career oriented towards research and development, working at the cutting edge of technology in the area of Information and Communication Technology.
The MS(IT) program at DA-IICT is a full time 2 years program open to graduates in any discipline. The applicants however must have at least two courses of Mathematics or Statistics in their undergraduate curriculum and must have completed at least one course on computer programming. This program aims at producing software developers to meet the ever-changing requirements of the global IT industry. Subjects under this program deals with Communications, Programming Paradigms, Algorithms, Network Programming, Software Engineering. At the end of the first year, the students undergo summer internship and during the last six months of the course, students go in for industrial training.
The MS(ICT-ARD) program at DA-IICT is a full time 2 years program open to graduates in agricultural sciences, engineering and allied fields. The program is specifically designed to meet the professional needs of applying and using effectively Information Technology in agricultural and rural development and agri-business. The course aims to develop professionals who can develop, implement and manage technology enabled information systems for agricultural and rural development and agribusiness as also apply IT for agricultural, agro-processing and farming operations.
The M.Des The Master in Design (Multimedia) Program at DA-IICT is a full time two-year Program. Responding to the growing need to design information products and services this multimedia Program seeks to unify concepts of communication, theories of the person and advances in computer technology into one. Usually Programs in multimedia are presented as discrete modules of technique without integration. But this Program seeks to embed the latest advances in technology within the philosophy of perception and cognitive psychology while providing students semiotic tools to increase aesthetic sensitivity. The courses offered seek to produce a student who blends technological acuteness with cultural sensitivity and design sensibility. Such hybridity is essential to the emerging markets of infotainment and the growing demand for new and innovative design solutions. The Program aims to bring students to an understanding of both the design and aesthetic components of Information and Communication Technology, as well as the social and cultural contexts which give it meaning and relevance.
The Program is open to graduates of any discipline who have at least four years of education after completion of 10+2 or equivalent. The program seeks to respond to the growing need to design information products and services in such a way that they become meaningful links to related knowledge base.
The Ph.D program at DA-IICT is conventionally a 3 to 5 years program. The doctoral program leading towards the award of the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D) provides the students an opportunity to train for independent research as a preparation for a career in academia or in R&D establishments. The program comprises both course and research work. The amount of coursework one has to undergo depends on the candidate's past background and the research one is engaged in. The research work to be undertaken for Ph.D must include original contribution to the knowledge reserve culminating in a thesis to be submitted for the doctoral degree.
Student Placement Cell, a body constituted of students, faculty and staff members, organizes placement fairs in the campus in the month of July every year. Graduates of the institute have been working in a wide array of companies ranging across the vast domain of ICT and its associated fields. Some of the notable recruiters in the past few years have been Accenture, Adobe Systems, ARM Limited, Cadence Design Systems, Ericsson, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Infosys Technologies, Intel, Microsoft, MindTree Consulting, Oracle, Patni, Persistent Systems, Qualcomm, Reliance Communications, SAP Labs, ST Microelectronics, Sun Microsystems, Tata Consultancy Services, Texas Instruments, Tech Mahindra, Wipro and others.
Students from DAIICT have actively pursued higher education in very diverse fields of technology, management and design. In 2004, three students of DAIICT had challenged, in the Gujarat High Court, IIMA decision to not offer admission interviews to them citing their eligibility criteria (AIU or AICTE affiliation was needed at that time). The judgement was passed in the favor of students and the CAT eligibility criteria was subsequently modified.
Over the last eight years of its existence, its students have accomplished outstanding feats, some of which are listed below
The University fosters into students an urge for practical utilization of their skills by encouraging extra curricular activities like identifying and solving rural and urban problems, organisation of national level events and workshops, social service, stage and street plays, critical appreciation of films, learning foreign languages, appreciating cultural events organised by SPICMACAY and the like.
