Notable former football players

Former Hull City captain Ian Ashbee played for the club on a short loan spell in 1996. He made 8 appearances and scored 3 goals before moving back to the East Yorkshire club. He now plays for Preston North End after signing for the club in January 2011.

Eiður Guðjohnsen started his football career at ÍR when he was six until he was 15, he has played for Bolton - Chelsea - Stoke - Fulham, he currently is playing for AEK Athens in Greece, he has also played for Barcelona in Spain and Monaco in France.

Eyjólfur Héðinsson is a former player of ÍR and now plays for SønderjyskE in the Danish Superliga.

In March 2012 former Scottish international midfielder Nigel Quashie joined the club as a player/assistant manager.
